Prehistoric Period means the time before writing was invented, so we know about it mainly from tools, bones, cave paintings, and settlements.

Main Divisions of Prehistoric Period

1) Paleolithic Age (Old Stone Age)

* Earliest phase of human history
* Humans used rough stone tools
* People lived by hunting and food gathering
* Fire was discovered during this age
* Humans lived in caves

Important sites in India:

* Bhimbetka Rock Shelters
* Hunsgi Valley



2) Mesolithic Age (Middle Stone Age)

* Small stone tools called microliths were used
* Hunting continued but fishing also increased
* Beginning of semi-settled life
* Dog was probably first domesticated animal

Important site:

* Bagor



3) Neolithic Age (New Stone Age)

* Polished stone tools were used
* Agriculture started
* Permanent houses were built
* Pottery began
* Animals were domesticated

* Mehrgarh
* Burzahom



 4) Chalcolithic Age (Copper Stone Age)

* Copper and stone tools both used
* Village life developed
* Trade started
* Agriculture became stronger

 प्रागैतिहासिक काल (Hindi) 📘⏳

**प्रागैतिहासिक काल** वह समय है जब लिखने की कला विकसित नहीं हुई थी। इसलिए जानकारी पत्थर के औजारों, हड्डियों, गुफा चित्रों और बस्तियों से मिलती है।

प्रागैतिहासिक काल के मुख्य भाग

1) पुरापाषाण काल (Paleolithic Age)

* यह मानव इतिहास का सबसे प्रारंभिक काल था
* मनुष्य खुरदरे पत्थर के औजार इस्तेमाल करता था
* जीवन शिकार और भोजन संग्रह पर आधारित था
* आग की खोज इसी काल में हुई
* मनुष्य गुफाओं में रहता था

2) मध्यपाषाण काल (Mesolithic Age)

* छोटे पत्थर के औजार (Microliths) उपयोग हुए
* शिकार के साथ मछली पकड़ना बढ़ा
* अर्ध-स्थायी जीवन शुरू हुआ
* कुत्ता पहला पालतू जानवर माना जाता है

3) नवपाषाण काल (Neolithic Age)

* चिकने पत्थर के औजार
* कृषि की शुरुआत
* स्थायी घर बने
* मिट्टी के बर्तन शुरू हुए
* पशुपालन शुरू हुआ

4) ताम्रपाषाण काल (Chalcolithic Age)

* तांबा और पत्थर दोनों के औजार
* गाँवों का विकास
* व्यापार शुरू हुआ
